David will be forever remembered as the inspirational captain of Scotland's 1990 Grand Slam-winning side - and for leading the 'slow walk' to face England at Murrayfield in the decider.
Ironically, he could have played for England, having taken part in an under-23 trial match. However, his heart was always with Scotland, and he won a total of 44 caps before what many rugby fans regard as his premature retirement in 1992.
Fiercely competitive, David was the archetypal modern forward, with excellent handling ability and a great turn of pace. He toured Australia with the victorious 1989 Lions, playing in all three Tests.
